How to test a website is indexed on Bing and Google.

Website Indexed

How long does it take for a website to be indexed?  – To show in the search engines.

Although it varies, it seems to take as little as 4 days and up to 6 months for a site to be crawled by Google and attribute authority to the domain.  When you publish a new blog post, site page, or website in general, there are many factors that determine how quickly it will be indexed by Google.  A longer-established website will index better and rank higher, add to this an active website, plenty of unique content and active on social media this all helps to index better with Google.

Google Spoil Us, they automatically index our websites

Most of us simply publish a website and ‘as if by magic’ Google includes (indexes) our website and publish search results.  This is great, indeed the service from Google has improved over the past 20 years.  Google improves its algorithms and searches technology to benefit the searcher. Google is motivated to capture as much rich data (the text on your website) as possible from your website so they can produce accurate search results for their customers.

Once Indexed The Work Begins

Simply showing in a Google search will not be good enough.  You need to make sure you rank high for your chosen phrases.  To do this your website should be optimised – page by page.  This means making sure your page content is descriptive, the cornerstone content text is added to the META sections, you don’t overdo it,  you write in an understandable and easy to read way and your website is not stagnant.

The website was always meant to be a changing platform, never a brochure online and Google penalise stagnant websites.  So, updating often is a must.

Social media is huge, we live and breath it.  Your customers devour it therefor if you are a business owner you must be involved with at least the to socials.

Launching with just 8.4 percent of the search market share, they quickly crossed 10 percent, and in a deal, later that year to power Yahoo search rose to 28.1 percent.  In 2016, they added AOL to the sites they provide search results for.

What To Ask When Starting A New Website

Website Design

Not all websites are equal.  Like many products or services many may look the same but its the background and the small print, you need to look at.  Pointers to ensure a great website to promote your business.

You need to be able to access and update your website yourself.  You cant have to do this but you need control.  You don’t want to rely on a company to make all your updates.  Ask for your logins.

Your website must have SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) options that you can edit.  SEO options are sections within your website designed to tell search engines what each page is about.

Your website should have a site map. SEO again. Site maps are a way to tell search engines which pages you want to be seen.

Ideally, your website should be indexed and verified by Google.  This is not absolutely essential as Google will pick your website up anyway, there are other search engines like Bing for example.  But a Google verified website will perform better.

We strongly recommend adding an SSL certificate.  This makes your website more secure so it’s good for your visitor’s data, you get a padlock icon in the address bar saying ‘secure’ and – guess what – Google rank SSL websites higher.  Indeed it is anticipated that non SSL websites soon will not be included in search results. Don’t get caught out.

Have social share buttons – Be on social media.  Love it or hate it, you must be represented and involved on social media.  That’s where your customers are.

Keep the website up to date.  Your website is your shop window.   The most successful websites I work with reflect the company online via the website.  This is so easy but takes a little time.  Set up a process where your company information, what you are producing, what customers say, who works with you etc is published online.  So your prospective customers and established customers know all about it.

And lastly – Make it colour match and look pretty!  Why not :)

SSL Certificate

I find myself talking about SSL Certificates often recently. I recommend installing these security verification certificates on almost all websites, established or new.  The title doesn’t really do justice to the benefits so here are the main reasons to set up an SSL Certificate for your business website.

Better customer trust and better search ranking.

1. The main function of an SSL certificate is to protect the website server to client communication. On installing SSL, information is encrypted. In layman’s terms, the data is locked and can only be unlocked by the intended recipient (browser or server). While dealing with sensitive data such as IDs, passwords, credit card numbers, etc., SSL helps you protect against the hackers. As the data is turned into the undecipherable format by SSL

2. SSL Affirms Your Identity
The second task of an SSL certificate is to provide authentication to a website. Identity verification is one of the most important aspects as far as web security. There is no doubt about the fact that the internet is increasingly deceptive.

When you want to install an SSL certificate, you must go through a validation process set by an independent third party called a Certificate Authority (CA). Depending on the type of certificate, the CA verifies the identity of you and your organisation. Once you have proved your identity, your website gets trust indicators vouching for your integrity. When users see them, they know who they’re talking to.

Such verification makes sure that no imposter creates a fake website pretending to be yours. In technical terms, this is called Phishing. Thus, SSL helps users drive to your real website, saves users from frauds and enhances your reputation.

3. Better Search Engine Ranking
In 2014, Google made changes to its algorithm in order to give the upper hand to SSL HTTPS-enabled websites. This has been evident in various studies conducted by SEO experts around the world. One such study shows a strong correlation between HTTPS and higher search engine rankings. Your site with SSL is verified, therefore more trustworthy, therefore ranked higher by Google.

4. SSL Helps You Satisfy PCI/DSS Requirements
If you accept online payments, you must know a thing or two about PCI/DSS requirements. To receive online payments, your website must be PCI compliant. Having an SSL certificate installed is one of the 12 primary requirements set by the payment card industry (PCI). Therefore, SSL is essential—whether you want it or not.

5. SSL Improves Customer Trust
SSL certificates are vital from a customer trust point of view. The easy to identify signs inform the users that the data they send will be secured. Once they know that you’re a legitimate entity, they’re far more likely to do business with you or even revisit your site.

6. Google Made SSL Mandatory in 2018
To give a safer web browsing experience from 2018 onwards, Google has decided to flag the websites which do not have an SSL Certificate installed on their website. If anyone fails to comply with this rule, all the popular web browsers used around the globe like Google Chrome Safari Firefox Mozilla will punish them by giving a warning message of ‘Not Secure’ on the URL bar. It could be possible that in the near future website may even get blocked to load on the browser. No matter which website you have, from a personal blog to any shopping portal SSL is mandatory and by not following with it may result in loss of visitors.

7. How safe would you feel if your browser warned you about a website being “not secure”? Because that’s what will be shown in the upcoming version of Chrome if you don’t have an SSL certificate.

Two Real Results

I installed two SSL Certificates on service businesses website in Darlington two years ago.  Both have increased customer engagement in the last two years.  One is a builder,  he is receiving a few valuable leads from his website per month.  The other is a restoration company who now receive on average three leads per week.  And both are attracting higher levels of site visitors.

Social Media Marketing

Steady Growth

A hot phrase at the moment, ‘Social Media Marketing’ – recently business owners have realised the value of being active on social media.  The big business, of course, has been active for some time, especially the internationals like Nike, Coca Cola etc.  Small business now is interested in it – I know this as the last three months 90% of all enquiries were for Social Media Marketing.  That’s huge, last time I saw this demand was in the golden days of websites for business back in the early 2000s

Why it Took Us So Long To Catch On To Social Media Marketing?

It was new, who trusts anything new, right?  Its seemed meaningless, so much information has been ‘shared’ for what purpose, we considered it a waste of time.  It felt like a waste of time.  Small businesses run full blast all the time, so wasting time on social media marketing with little obvious RoI was abandoned.

Let Me Cut To The Point

Social Marketing does work, and it can attract the perfect customer which is something traditional advertising never could do.  You have to stick at it, be organised, be consistent, willing to engage, care about your readers and not sell-sell- sell.

3 Pointers To Start Working With Social Media Marketing

1 – Regular, set some time each week to look at and engage on all your chosen social media platforms.

2 – Prepare mini promotional blocks of text about your company (not a sales pitch) but something you want to say and ‘stamp’ this within your content as you go.

3 – Link it all together; link your Social Media Marketing content to your website (not just the homepage).  Embed your social media on your website, suggest contact via your social media platforms and mention your social media locations on all marketing materials and emails.

I hope that’s a good starter guide for you.

Back Story

I have worked in digital marketing for nearly 20 years.  I was sceptical of Social Media Marketing when it first arrived and rightly so because it was a waste of time in the early years.  Not now, It has matured, got some traction and I have proven it is an amazing marketing tool.  The future – I like to predict – will be Social Media Marketing platforms pushing you for your advertising money.  Therefore now is the sweet-spot to get involved.
